Chamber Of Commerce Honors Mitchell CypressCLEWISTON - On Sept. 17, the 54th Annual Clewiston Chamber of Commerce Dinner held a Social Time Dinner.Delivering the Keynote Address was Mitchell Cypress, President/Acting Chairman for the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Mitchell was introduced by Diane Buster and Sally Tommie, who presented him as a leader who has shown great perseverance and determination. During his address, Mitchell spoke of the ingredients needed to be a leader of the 2,800 plus tribe that has gaming and tobacco revenues as its income generators. Mitchell also clarified some misconceptions about Seminoles. One in particular was the myth that Seminoles do not pay taxes. Cypress explained to all in attendance that each Seminole pays every sort of tax, except property taxes because the Tribe’s reservations are on trust land. He also noted the Tribe’s efforts to establish positive ties and communication with the towns that surround its five reservations. Mitchell's address earned a round of applause from all of the attendees, who represent many of the businesses in the community. After Cypress’s speech, President Nan Schmiedeberg presented him with a small sword as a token of the Chamber of Commerce’s appreciation. Congratulations to Mitchell on his recognition by the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce for his leadership role in the Seminole Tribe.
