SEMINOLES LAUNCH PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGNTribe prepares to celebrate 40th Anniversary of Federal Recognition
Contact: Laurie Parker "The Seminoles have played an important role in shaping the economic and cultural heritage of the state," said James Billie, chairman, Seminole Tribe of Florida. "Through this campaign, we hope to foster a greater understanding of the Seminole people and our commitment to our tribe and to Florida." This August marks the Seminoles 40th anniversary of federal acknowledgment as a sovereign nation and the grand opening of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. The museum will present the history and culture of the Seminole people through original artifacts, exhibits and photography. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is slated to open August 21, 1997. "As we approach our 40th anniversary as a sovereign nation, we want to share our tribal achievements and history with our fellow Floridians," said Chairman Billie. "Although we are a sovereign nation, we want the people of Florida to know we are proud to be Seminoles AND Floridians." By acknowledging the Seminoles in 1957, the United States entered into a government-to-government relationship with the tribe, recognizing their sovereignty.
